What is the meaning of the Jerusalem Cross?
You might be surprised to learn that the Jerusalem cross goes back to 11th century! The five-fold nature of the cross has been interpreted to signify the four Evangelists and Christ, the five wounds suffered by Christ, or the four parts of the world and Christ. Some have even suggested the four small crosses represent the gospels and the large cross represents the Holy Spirit. Either way, we know that the Jerusalem Cross was used in the Kingdom of Jerusalem beginning in the late 13th century as its emblem and coat of arms.
