I recently spent a couple of wonderful days in Kathmandu, Nepal. This was my first time in Nepal as a Catholic and I wanted to attend Mass before I left. I couldn’t find any information online about Mass times in Kathmandu but I noticed that according to Google, the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral opened at 6AM on weekdays, so I headed over to the church on a Tuesday morning, arriving at 6:30AM. Sure enough, Mass had just begun as I walked through the doors of this beautiful Cathedral, located in the south of Kathmandu.
A beautiful Mass at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral
I really enjoyed attending this Mass, which was celebrated in the Nepali language. This was the first time I have experienced a Mass with my shoes off, while sitting on a cushion on the floor. I could not understand much of what was being said, but the Mass followed the ordinary form (Novus Ordo), so I was able follow along quite nicely.
Mass Times at the Cathedral in Kathmandu
After Mass, I spent a few minutes talking with the celebrant, Father Lolith (I might have the spelling wrong). He is from another city in Nepal and spoke very good English. He confirmed the following Mass times at the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Cathedral in Kathmandu.
- Weekdays – 6:30AM in Nepali
- Saturday mornings – 9AM in Nepali
- Sunday mornings – 9AM in English
I highly recommend a visit to this beautiful Cathedral in Kathmandu. You will enjoy the unique experience of participating in a Mass which takes on some Buddhist characteristics. Even some of the artwork in the church, as the priest pointed out to me, has Buddhist undertones. If you’ve attended Mass in Kathmandu, feel free to leave a comment below. We’d love to hear about Mass times at other Catholic Churches in Kathmandu.
